Flashdict
While being abroad in the US for a business trip, I realized that sometimes my English vocabulary is not as complete as I wanted it to be. The typical solution to improve your vocabulary while living abroad usually involves noting down words you don’t know, translating them later, and then trying to memorize them. This process is annoying and the workflow is not simple enough. So, I searched the app store for apps that could ease this exact workflow. However, I couldn’t find any. This is how the idea for this app was born.
Most important for me was that the app is super easy and fast to use. No annoying menus. No unnecessary taps. No waiting. Offline functionality. So, I started searching for machine-readable dictionaries that are free to use. I found one that I can really recommend: https://www.wikdict.com/. As soon as I downloaded the data, I started coding. Finally, the first version of the app was ready. It is super quick and easy to use. As soon as the app is opened, the keyboard pops up, and the user can search for translations with real-time suggestions while still typing. Found a translation? Just tap on it and save it to your flashcard collection. That’s it! Super fast, easy to use, and no nonsense. Completely offline, no cloud, no AI. Sometimes less is more.
Currently, the app is still under development. Below are some screenshots where you can see the current state of development.
